Mr. Herndon was a valued and endearing Raytown Schools Superintendent from 1945-1974, and was a founding member of the first Kiwanis Club in Raytown. For the next forty years as a Kiwanian, he maintained a perfect attendance record in the club while faithfully serving the needs of children in the community. Mr. Herndon was a gardener, a hunter and it’s been said, ‘sure could yodel.’ He passed away in 1990, and his wife, Edith, passed away in 2001. A daughter, Mrs. Joanne Corlew, resides in the Raytown School District and a son, Gary, resides at Lake Winnebago.
The Raytown Three Trails Kiwanis Club named this annual golf tournament in honor and appreciation of Joe Herndon. Proceeds from the tournament will be used for service projects to benefit children in the Raytown School District as well as the Youth Sports Program. Alumni members, led by Hall of Fame recipients, are honored to join Kiwanis to help grow the tournament and enhance the proceeds shared for these worthy causes.
